Stop cropping heads off: focal points for photographers

Your best frame is only as good as its crop. Set a focal point on each photo once, and every thumbnail, tile and hero on your booking page keeps the face, not the ceiling. A visual tour of the photographer storefront, with real screenshots.

BTThe Bookatu team

Photographers get hit by a bug nobody else notices. Software loves neat rectangles, and photos refuse to be neat. The moment a layout crops your image into a wide tile or a square thumbnail, the default behaviour is to keep the centre. The centre is very often not where the person is. That is how a portfolio site ends up advertising a wedding photographer with a headless bride.

A booking page that behaves like a portfolio

On Bookatu, a photographer's public page leads with the work. The top of the page is a mosaic built from your gallery, with your name and city over the lead image and the rest arranged around it. Clients can open the whole set before they ever look at a price.

The dot that saves the crop

Every photo in your gallery has a draggable dot. Put it on the part that matters, a face, joined hands, the detail you want sold, and that point becomes the anchor for every crop of that image anywhere on the page. Wide hero, square tile, tiny thumbnail: the layout changes, the anchor does not.

The gallery manager: a focal dot on each photo, a caption, and ordering controls. Set it once per image.

It is a ten-second habit when you upload. Drag the dot, write a short caption if the story needs one, done. From then on the software does the remembering, and the software never gets tired and centre-crops your newborn shot into a photo of a blanket.

Small craft, real bookings

  • Lead with range: a wedding, a portrait, a brand shoot. The mosaic is your first conversation about what you do.
  • Put the focal dot on eyes for portraits, on hands for details, on the subject line for editorial work.
  • Captions double as quiet SEO: place names and session types read naturally to clients and crawlers alike.
  • Reorder seasonally. Spring minis up front in August, weddings up front in wedding season.

Clients do not book the photographer with the best work. They book the photographer whose work they saw properly.

None of this needs a separate website, a page builder or a plugin. Upload, drag the dot, and the same page that shows your work takes the booking and the deposit. The portfolio and the diary finally live at the same address.
