Print or email receipts at the till, and tax rates to three decimals
Every till sale now has a receipt you can print or email. Here is how that works, plus barcode scanners that end with Tab, opening the cash drawer, tax rates like 14.975%, and invoice payment links that charge the full total.
A client buys a bottle of shampoo on the way out and asks for a receipt. Here is what is new at the till, and a few money details that have to be exact.
A receipt for every sale
Ring up a sale on the Point of sale page (the Sell button on Products) and tap Record sale. The "Sale recorded" message now has two buttons, Print receipt and Email receipt. Sales made in Sell mode on the Scan station get them too.
Each receipt shows:
- Your business name, address and phone, and your tax registration number if you have one.
- A receipt number, and the date and time.
- Each item, with quantity and unit price when more than one was bought.
- The subtotal and discount, when you gave one.
- The total, the tax inside it when your prices include tax, and how it was paid.
The receipt is saved with the sale, so a later reprint shows the same items, prices and tax as on the day. Recent sales, further down the page, lists your last ten sales to reprint or email. It shows takings, so only people with the "See analytics & earnings" permission see it.
Printing uses the printer you already have
Printing goes through your browser's print dialog, so it uses whatever receipt printer your computer already prints to. Make that printer the default and pick its 80 mm roll paper once in the dialog. The receipt is 72 mm wide, the printable width of an 80 mm roll, and only the receipt prints.
To have each receipt come up on its own, turn on "Print a receipt when a sale is recorded". It sits in the "Receipt printer and cash drawer" card at the bottom of the Point of sale page. It is off by default, and only people with the "Manage the business" permission can change it. The print dialog then opens by itself, once per sale, so a refresh does not print twice. Someone still presses Print unless the browser is set to print straight to the default printer, which the card explains. The setting covers every till that records a sale.
How the cash drawer opens
A web page cannot open a cash drawer by itself. But most drawers plug into the receipt printer. The printer's driver, the software that runs it on your computer, can open the drawer each time it prints.
So look for a cash drawer or open drawer option in your printer driver's settings, and switch it on. Then turn on "Print a receipt when a sale is recorded". The drawer now opens as each receipt prints.
Your browser prints the receipt. Your printer opens the drawer.
Email it, and the sale joins their history
To email a receipt, the sale needs a client with an email address. Attach one before you record the sale, with "Attach client (for a receipt by email)", or afterwards, when you tap Email receipt. Search by name, email or phone, or tap "+ New client" and add a name plus an email or phone number.
Someone already on file with that email or phone is picked instead of being added twice. New clients from the till are saved without marketing consent, because asking for a receipt is not asking for offers.
The email matches the paper receipt and uses your Storefront language, like your other client emails. A second tap does not send it twice, and an address that bounced before is not tried again.
Anyone with the "See analytics & earnings" permission then sees the sale in the client's Purchase history, counted in their Lifetime spend. A sale already tied to one client cannot be moved to another.
Scanners that end with Tab
A USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner acts like a very fast keyboard. It types the code, then presses Enter or, on plenty of scanners, Tab. A scan ending in Tab now works just like one ending in Enter. That holds on the Point of sale page, the Scan station, Receive stock, Count stock and a product's Barcode box.
Bookatu tells a scanner from a person by speed. When you press Tab yourself, it still moves you to the next box.
Tax rates with three decimals
Some rates do not stop at a whole number. In Quebec, GST and QST together come to 14.975%. On the Tax page, the Rate (%) box now takes up to three decimals. Bookatu stores that exact rate and calculates with it. You enter it as one combined rate.
It is never rounded to 15%, whether on the Tax page, on the visit receipts clients open from their account, or on the till receipt. When the till receipt shows tax, it writes the rate the way your language does, so a French one reads 14,975 %.
The sums are exact too. Tax is worked out in whole cents, and half a cent always rounds up. So 14.975% of $100.00, which is $14.975, becomes $14.98.
Invoice payment links charge the full total
If "Charge tax" is on and "Prices include tax" is off on the Tax page, tax is added on top of each invoice. Payment links sent from Finance now charge that full total. The tax shows as its own line on the payment page, named with your Tax name, such as GST or VAT.
The total is fixed when you send the invoice. If the client opens the link weeks later, it charges the same total, even if your rate has changed since. If your prices include tax, nothing changes.
None of this changes how you ring up a sale. Tap the products, record it, and the receipt is ready when the client asks.
